When the sources disagree

Writing a guide from official pages should be simple. Then you find the hotel contradicting itself, and the tourism office contradicting the hotel.

Our rule on this site is that a fact appears only if we can name the page we read it on. That rule has a consequence nobody warns you about: you discover how often official pages disagree. Here are the ten contradictions we met while writing about the Manoir, and what we decided to print.

1. How far is Québec City?

The hotel's home page says 90 minutes. Its location page says the airport is about 120 minutes away and gives a total driving time of about 120 minutes. Loto-Québec says less than 90 minutes from the airport. Tourisme Charlevoix says about an hour and a half on one line and less than two hours on another. What we print: all four, in a table on getting here, and our advice to allow between ninety minutes and two hours.

2. The resort fee

The guest-services page gives $40 per room per night. The suite pages give $35. What we print: both, with a promise to state the applicable figure when we quote.

3. Pets

The hotel charges $60 per room per night for dogs and cats. Loto-Québec's page for the complex says $25 per night for service animals and household pets. What we print: both. We suspect the hotel's figure is current, but suspicion is not a source.

4. How many event venues?

Eleven, says the meetings page. Nineteen, says the weddings page. The capacity chart printed on both lists fourteen, and Loto-Québec also counts fourteen. What we print: the chart, and a note about the rest.

5. The Green Key year

The history page lists a Five Green Keys rating for 2024; the sustainability page speaks of a Five-Green Keys eco-rating for 2023. What we print: both years, which is probably just a page that has not been updated.

6. The Parc national des Hautes-Gorges

The same Tourisme Charlevoix page puts the park about 35 minutes from La Malbaie in one paragraph and about 45 minutes in another. What we print: "35 to 45 minutes".

7. Mont Grand-Fonds' trails

The mountain's own site counts 20 downhill trails; Tourisme Charlevoix counts 23. What we print: 20, because the mountain should know.

8. Room capacities

Two of the hotel's room pages give a capacity figure that seems far too high for the room described. What we print: nothing, except where the figure is plausible — and we ask the hotel when a guest needs to know.

9. The casino floor

Loto-Québec today lists over 700 slot machines and 9 gaming tables. The French Wikipedia article gives older, higher figures. What we print: the operator's numbers, neutrally, once, on the casino page.

10. The postcode

Loto-Québec prints the hotel's postcode as "GR5 1X7", which is not a valid Canadian postcode. The hotel prints G5A 1X7. What we print: G5A 1X7.

Why we bother

None of these contradictions is a scandal. They are what happens when a large hotel, a gaming corporation and a regional tourism office each maintain their own pages. But a traveller who reads one number on one page and finds another on the bill feels misled, and a guide that quietly picks the friendlier figure is part of the problem. Printing both, with the source, is slower. It is also the only way we know to be useful.

The request sheet

Write your dates and the room you have in mind on the lines below. A person at our desk checks what the Manoir has open for those nights, with the hotel or a booking partner, and answers by email.

Thank you — your sheet has reached our desk. We check the dates with the hotel or a booking partner and write back with what is open and the price. Nothing is booked or charged until you agree.

We are paid a booking commission only when a request sent from this sheet becomes a confirmed stay — by the hotel or by the booking partner that completes it, never by you. How we earn. This is a request, not a reservation, and we never ask for a card number.
