Every grand hotel needs a room that lets people in the door, and at the Manoir it is the Fairmont room. The hotel's own description is brief and honest: these rooms are "located throughout the hotel". That phrase is the key to the category. You may be given a quiet room over a garden, a room on a courtyard, or one with a slice of the river at an angle. You will not be promised the St. Lawrence.
What you get
At 21 square metres the room is the size of a standard modern hotel room, laid out in the château's style. There is a 42-inch television, a Nespresso machine and kettle, a mini-bar, a desk, bathrobes and Le Labo bath products, and the general list the hotel applies to all its rooms — air conditioning, wireless internet and windows that open. The three versions differ only in the bed: a King for a couple who like room to spread out, a Queen, or two Doubles for friends or a parent with a child.
Who it suits
We would book a Fairmont room for a short stay when the days will be spent outside: a golf weekend, two days of skiing at Mont Grand-Fonds, a whale-watching trip with an early start. If the room is mainly a place to sleep and change, paying for the view is less important. It also suits guests who come for an event in the conference centre and want to stay under the same roof.
Who should go up a category
If you are coming to the Manoir to look at the river, step up to a Fairmont View room — it is exactly the same size, with the view guaranteed. A family of three or four for more than a night will feel the walls in 21 m²; the Deluxe rooms add six square metres and a sofa bed.
What to write on the request sheet
Tell us which bed you need, and if you would accept a room without any view at all or would prefer we ask for a higher floor or a garden side. Hotels cannot always promise a particular room in this category, but they can note a preference. If you are travelling with a dog or a cat, say so: the hotel's guest-services page puts the pet charge at $60 per room per night, and some room pages are tagged pet-friendly while others are not.
